1. What is the aim of my inter-layers ?
The protection of my products, the stabilization of my palette, a communication mean ...
► The nature of my products and their packaging:
As an example, the liquid, powders or pasty loads move during their transport, they are more difficult to stabilize. The weight and the size of the product also have an impact on the load stability. Very light products are more difficult to stabilize than heavy products; in contrast heavy products in small parcel tend to shear the inter-layers. More than all, the sharp of the product impact on the stability: difficult geometric shape can be unstable and sharp shape present a risk of perforation for neighboring lots.
Bags, cardboard, tin, jerry-cans, buckets, big bags... they need all a different inter-layer specification.
► The logistics and transport
What is the path covered by my palette, does it suffer multiple loads and unloads? Are my pallets stacked during storage and/or during transport?
Road, rail, sea, air, mail, to what modes of transport should my pallet resist?
► The quality and the environment
The inter-layers, must also meet your standard of quality and hygiene: ISO 22000, HACCP. It must comply to a specific regulation: FDA, EC1935/2004, EC 2023/2006 and it should answer to your corporate specific environmental requirements: Eco-design, FSC ...
The choice of materials is wide: paper, cardboard, corrugated cardboard, plastic film, plastic plate, wooden plate ... And for each choice, you will need to define the optimum grammage to avoid shearing and ensure the necessary stiffness.
Finally, you have to define the size of the inter-layers : should it be the same size as the surface occupied by my products, smaller or larger ?
At the bottom of the pallet, to protect my products against the rising damp of the wood pallet and its minor and major defects. As inter-layers, so as to stabilize the columnar or cross load and provide cohesion between the layers. As a top sheet, to protect against possible stacking, but also to protect against dust.
Or the 3 spots!
Check that your palletizer is equipped to deposit the pads.
Do you have a dispenser and a gripping system that can handle pallet spacers?
