STABUMAX® and the Challenges of Load Securing

Interview with Céline REGIS, R&D Engineer – CGP Coating Innovation

Céline

On the occasion of recent tests carried out by a certification body on our STABUMAX® product, we spoke with Céline REGIS, R&D Engineer at CGP COATING INNOVATION, to gain a better understanding of the technical challenges involved in load securing.

1- Céline, can you introduce STABUMAX® and the needs it addresses?

STABUMAX® is a product commonly referred to as an anti-slip mat.

It is equipment designed to be used as an anti-slip product in the transportation of goods. The purpose of this product is to contribute to load securing, most often in trucks, but also in any other vehicle used for transporting goods. It increases the coefficient of friction between the transported goods and the vehicle floor, thereby improving stability and contributing to the safety of the load.

It also helps reduce the amount of securing equipment (straps, chains, etc.) required to completely secure the goods.

2- What are the main risks associated with improper load securing during the transportation of goods?

Improper securing of a load in a transport vehicle can initially lead to sliding or tipping phenomena inside the truck, which may cause damage to the goods (breakage, non-conformity, etc.). At a higher level of severity, these failures may result in a partial or total loss of the load onto the roadway (loss of goods, environmental impacts such as pollution, waste, etc.).

Finally, in critical situations, improper load securing represents a major accident risk factor.

3- What technical characteristics distinguish STABUMAX® in the load securing solutions market?

The function of STABUMAX® is to increase friction at the interfaces involved and thus oppose the dynamic forces that may occur during transport phases (acceleration, braking, changes of direction).

The main characteristic of the anti-slip mat is its dynamic coefficient of friction, ideally assessed by a certification body according to a specific standard: VDI 2700-14 versus EN 12195-1/B.

Strength and/or thickness are also criteria that must be taken into account depending on the nature and physical characteristics of the load to be secured.

From an environmental perspective, it is also fully compatible with the paper recycling stream.

4- When developing a solution such as STABUMAX®, what are the most important performance criteria to consider?

The coefficient of friction is the primary performance criterion and must be assessed appropriately according to the conditions of use.

It may also provide protection for vehicle floors (dirt, damaged surfaces, moisture, etc.).

STABUMAX® is partly manufactured from recycled materials and offers the advantage of being fully recyclable within the paper recycling industry, making it a better solution from an environmental point of view.

5- Our company has recently undergone tests to certify STABUMAX®. What do these tests involve?

In our laboratory, we are equipped to measure coefficients of friction with different interfaces in accordance with current standards. However, in the interest of neutrality, we chose to call upon an approved and recognized certification body to validate the performance of our product.
