The slipsheet : challenges, benefits, and logistics perspectives
Interview with Quentin BELLAMY, Key Account Manager – CGP Coating Innovation
In this edition of the Question of the Month, we are going to talk about the use of slipsheets in logistics.
We will look back at their advantages, practical applications, and the benefits for companies.
We asked Quentin BELLAMY, Key Account Manager at CGP Coating Innovation.
1- Quentin, What is a slipsheet?
A slipsheet is a durable sheet made of cardboard or plastic used in logistics to move and store goods. It is placed underneath products instead of a traditional pallet, or between several layers of cartons to properly stabilize the load.
Since it is much lighter and takes up less space than a wooden pallet, it helps save space in trucks and warehouses while reducing transportation costs.
To handle it, a forklift equipped with a special system called a “push-pull” is generally used.
At CGP COATING INNOVATION, we manufacture the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet.
2- What are currently the main advantages of the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet compared to traditional palletization?
The central theme of the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet is volume optimization inside containers. Its use mainly makes sense when the factory is focused on export markets.
Removing the wooden pallet makes it possible to redefine palletization models thanks to the space freed up by eliminating the pallet.
And when the products are small and the loads are stackable, the gain is huge. One of our clients even confirms that they gained 10% additional volume in their containers.
Without the pallet, palletization is revolutionized! More products transported, better stability due to grip, simplified pallet management reduced to a minimum…
The real “game-changer” is for factories forced to load goods in bulk. Manual operations requiring 2 to 3 people and taking hours box by box can now be completed in 30 minutes using complete load units on ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheets.
3- What concrete benefits can companies expect from implementing an ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet solution (transport, storage, costs, ergonomics, CSR, etc.)?
Implementing the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet solution addresses objectives that are at the heart of today’s challenges:
More products per container : Every time a pallet is removed, 15 cm of space is gained. If stacking is possible, this means 2 to 3 additional layers of products in the same container.
Warehouse space optimization : When you consider that 1m3 can only store 7 wooden pallets, whereas the same space could hold 1,000 slipsheets, the impact on storage becomes immediately clear.
Reduced shipments : The direct consequence of container optimization is a reduction in the number of containers shipped by the end of the year.
Faster loading operations : Especially for bulk loading.
Preserving operator well-being: What could be better than eliminating the handling of potentially heavy loads for operators?
A concrete and measurable CSR application : The ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet is a recyclable solution that eliminates wooden pallets inside containers and reduces the carbon footprint associated with container shipping.
4- Why are some companies still hesitant to completely or partially replace pallets?
The benefits of implementing the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet are undeniable. In fact, presenting the solution immediately generates strong interest from manufacturers. Nevertheless, concerns quickly arise when logistics teams begin to project the solution into their own processes.
How do I integrate slipsheets? Will this new palletization method impact my warehouses? How do I handle my products now that I no longer have pallets? And what about my customers in all of this? This project is going to involve quite a lot of people…
Every factory has its own constraints, and the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet adapts to each configuration.
This type of initiative is highly involving, which is why we support our clients through each of the phases mentioned above.
5- Do you currently see the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet as a complementary alternative or as a true replacement for pallets in certain sectors?
In Europe, the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet is seen as a complementary alternative to the massively standardized wooden pallet. However, other continents have built their logistics processes around the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet. It may sound futuristic to European manufacturers when I explain that, in some parts of the world, factories do not use pallets at all everything is handled on slipsheets.
6- What types of flows or products are best suited to this technology ?
CGP manufactures slipsheets capable of lifting up to 1.8 tons and applying anti-slip and water-resistant coatings. This expertise allows us to stabilize and ship all types of products and materials on slipsheets: boxes, bags, buckets, drums, big bags… made of cardboard, metal, glass, plastic…
The question to ask is the following : Does the ECOLOGISTIK® Slipsheet make sense for my business?
🎤 I also had the opportunity to host a conference dedicated to the logistics packaging of tomorrow.
